The Town of Portland (pop. 5500) has an area of approximately 28 square miles, its northern boundary edges beautiful Lake Erie. Two miles back is a clayey-loam soil area and stretching back for another mile is a rich gravel soil. The surface then rises to a hilly ridge forming the beautiful Chautauqua Hills a part of the great water shed which forms the continental divide for our county, elevation 1800 feet.

Populated Areas: There are four concentrated populated areas lying within the township.

Village of Brocton (pop. 1500) is an incorporated village lying within the Portland Township. The business district centering along Route 20, consists of convenient stores, specialty shops, auto repair shops, used car dealerships, eating establishments, a post office and bank. Five churches of different denominations are also located within the village.

Hamlet of Portland lies one mile west of the Village of Brocton centering along Route 20. A post office, convenient stores, eating establishment, greenhouse, auto repair shop, and one church are located in this area.

Greencrest and Van Buren Point lies on the Lake Erie Shoreline along Route 5. Lying on the Lake makes this areas population increase during the summer months although more people are discovering this area as a fine place to live year round.

West Portland Once a busy stage coach stop, this area of the Town remains a concentrated residential area with a mobile home park and a church.

Remaining Township The remainder of the Town consists of rural residences, large farms and several mobile home parks. A state correctional facility also lies within the Township and a privately owned 9 hole golf course.
